1.17 needs Java jdk-16.0.1 instead of jre1.8.0_291, and since Amidst seems to be running with jre1.8.0_291, it crashes. The same thing happened to me when i was launching minecraft 1.17 from MultiMC, fortunately you can make exeptions for what Java version MultiMC uses and that solves the issue. The main launcher seems to do this automaticly.
